Palliative Care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing challenges associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification, impeccable assessment, management of pain, and psychosocial and emotional support.
Any person of any age with a confirmed medical diagnosis of a life-limiting condition qualifies for palliative care.
The Midlands Hospice care team offers a unique home-based care plan for each patient to ensure their individuality and dignity is respected and upheld.
All staff members are required to be sufficiently trained in order to perform to their best potential. Registered nurses are required to obtain the certificate in Palliative Nursing care which is recognized as a scarce skill within the South African Healthcare context.
In-service training is an ongoing requirement that is offered on a regular basis.
In addition to the above, courses are offered to the community on a regular basis, covering all topics related to Home-based Palliative Care.
Admission Criteria to the Midlands Hospice Programme:
A confirmed diagnosis of HIV
A confirmed diagnosis of TB in the initial phase of treatment
A confirmed diagnosis of cancer/ MN.
A confirmed medical diagnosis (from a medical doctor) of an end-stage medical condition that is both life-limiting and has a reduced life expectancy
